Drake Maye faces scrutiny amid Patriots' slow start

New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye is facing intense scrutiny following a difficult 1-2 start to the 2026 NFL season, highlighted by a 35-6 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Through three games, Maye has recorded seven turnovers, including six interceptions and one lost fumble, a significant decline from his previous season.

Speculation has emerged regarding a potential shoulder injury, stemming from a previous injury sustained during the AFC Championship. However, Maye has directly denied that any physical ailment is impacting his play or decision-making, stating, “It hasn’t. And it doesn’t impact my decision-making.”

Amid the performance struggles, rumors of a rift between Maye and head coach Mike Vrabel have surfaced. Vrabel dismissed these reports, asserting his commitment to the team and stating, “I’m here because Drake was the quarterback.” Analysts have debated whether the decline is due to physical issues, coaching, or the team's overall offensive struggles as they prepare to face the Buffalo Bills.
