Drammen Krokstadelva fire destroys 100 homes, triggers insurance claims and aid

A large fire swept through the Krokstadelva neighbourhood of Drammen, Norway, leaving more than 100 houses totally destroyed and forcing the evacuation of about 400 residents.

Lawyer Anders Hauge warned that, although many affected homeowners lacked the necessary house insurance, insurers may still be liable because they have a statutory duty to assess customers' needs and provide appropriate guidance. He argues that insurers must prove they fulfilled this duty to avoid compensation claims.

Drammen municipal officials are preparing a long‑term response. Municipal director Sudhir Sharma said the psychosocial crisis team, medical staff and mental‑health services will remain available, with special attention to children and young people. The municipality expects the assistance needs to continue for up to two years as families cope with displacement and the area remains a construction site.
