Drapetsona and Piraeus port historical development
The historical development of Drapetsona and the Piraeus port is highlighted through personal accounts from the early 20th century. In 1920, the port emerged as a central commercial hub, surpassing Ermoupoli and Patras in maritime connectivity.
By 1880, the port possessed significant infrastructure, including mooring moles and fueling facilities, followed by the addition of docking reservoirs in 1913. The connection of the railway to the port and the Piraeus–Larissa line integrated the area with mainland Greece. Furthermore, the opening of the Corinth Canal brought Piraeus 90 nautical miles closer to European commercial centers, driving migration as families moved to the region in search of industrial and port-related labor.
