DRC advances mining sector with lithium exports and new artisanal zones

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is seeing significant developments in its mining sector. In the Tanganyika province, the first shipments of lithium concentrates from Manono have begun exporting through the port of Kalemie. On July 22, 2026, Governor Christian Kitungwa Muteba presided over the inaugural departure of a vessel from the Mutowa port, traveling across Lake Tanganyika toward Kigoma, Tanzania, to access international markets.

In the Fizi territory of South Kivu, the mining company Leda Mining Congo (LMC SA) has announced the establishment of a “tolerance zone” for artisanal mining in the Ngadja sector. This move follows rumors regarding the potential forced eviction of local miners from the company's concessions. LMC SA stated that the zone is intended to facilitate peaceful cohabitation and support local livelihoods. The area will be managed by a designated manager appointed by the company in coordination with provincial mining authorities.
