Democratic Republic of the Congo addresses justice and humanitarian crises

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is facing a complex convergence of humanitarian and judicial crises. Amnesty International has launched the ‘Six million voices for justice in Congo’ campaign to pressure authorities for mechanisms to prosecute international crimes, particularly following decades of conflict in the east.

United Nations officials have described the security situation in eastern provinces like North Kivu, South Kivu, and Ituri as ‘extremely alarming,’ documenting thousands of human rights violations and nearly 9,500 victims in 2026. The region also faces a severe Ebola epidemic with over 8,000 confirmed cases and 3,900 deaths.

In response to these challenges, the Congolese government is pursuing several international partnerships. France has committed 1.3 million euros to a project (2026-2028) aimed at improving legal access and reparations for victims of conflict-related sexual violence. Additionally, the DRC and Russia are working to finalize judicial cooperation agreements regarding crime fighting and the transfer of convicted persons.

On the domestic front, the FRIVAO process has announced an initial 120 million USD fund for collective reparations in the Greater Oriental region, targeting infrastructure and economic recovery in Ituri, Tshopo, Haut-Uélé, and Bas-Uélé.
