DRC and France expand bilateral air traffic rights
The Democratic Republic of the Congo and France signed a memorandum of understanding on September 14, 2026, to expand bilateral air traffic rights. Starting in April 2027, the number of authorized weekly flight frequencies for airlines from both nations will increase from seven to 11.
The agreement aims to facilitate travel for the Congolese diaspora, students, and business travelers. While the deal provides more capacity for carriers like Air Congo—which launched its Paris service in August 2026—the airline's ability to fully utilize these rights faces regulatory hurdles. Congolese-certified airlines currently remain subject to European Commission operating restrictions due to identified shortcomings in the country’s aviation safety oversight.
Beyond flight frequencies, the memorandum includes provisions for future cooperation regarding aviation sustainability and environmental issues.
