Democratic Republic of the Congo faces fires and displacement crises
The Democratic Republic of the Congo is facing multiple humanitarian crises across the eastern provinces. In Bukavu, South Kivu, a series of devastating fires struck on September 21, 2026. One major blaze in the Nyalukemba neighborhood destroyed over 500 homes and resulted in at least five deaths, including children. The fires also damaged local infrastructure, including schools and churches.
In Goma, a separate residential fire in the Kyeshero neighborhood claimed the lives of a mother and her five children. Local human rights advocates have called for a United Nations investigation into the frequency of these fires, suggesting that criminal activity or faulty electrical connections may be factors.
In other regions, instability continues to drive displacement. In Bunia, military operations and gunfire at the Kigonze displaced persons site have caused tension and reported looting. Meanwhile, in the Fizi territory, officials report that more than 240,000 people have been displaced due to ongoing armed conflict, prompting urgent calls for international humanitarian aid.
