DRC energy crisis prompts $100 billion revitalization proposal
The Democratic Republic of the Congo faces a severe structural electricity crisis affecting production, transport, and distribution. In Kinshasa, the power deficit is acute, with an estimated need of 1,200 MW against an average supply of approximately 620 MW. During seasonal reductions, availability can drop to around 450 MW, leading to frequent load shedding that disrupts businesses and households.
To address these challenges, engineer Rémy Luvumbu of Arc. en-Tech Engineering has proposed an ambitious energy revitalization plan, described as a ‘Marshall Plan’ for the national electricity company, SNEL. The vision involves mobilizing up to $100 billion in investments to modernize the national grid, rehabilitate existing infrastructure, and develop the Grand Inga project. Additionally, the use of floating power plants has been proposed as a potential measure to provide immediate supplemental capacity to the capital.
