DRC Fashion Week celebrates La Sape cultural movement
The sixth edition of DRC Fashion Week took place in Kinshasa, centering on ‘La Sape’ (Société des Ambianceurs et des Personnes Élégantes), a cultural movement rooted in the 1960s characterized by distinctive dandyism and elegant dressing.
The event served as a platform for cultural rapprochement between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Republic of the Congo, bringing together designers, stylists, and Sapeurs from both nations. Participants adhered to a dress code featuring the colors of the Congolese flags to celebrate shared heritage.
Patrick Muyaya Katembwe, the Minister of Communication and Media, attended the event, stating that the DRC is increasingly demonstrating its cultural power. Organizers Nathalie Eoma and Bénie Nyota noted the strong mobilization of attendees from both Kinshasa and Brazzaville.
