DRC Fisheries Minister implements reforms to boost food sovereignty

Jean-Pierre Tshimanga Bwana, the Minister of Fisheries and Livestock in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, has outlined several reforms aimed at strengthening food sovereignty and increasing fish production. These initiatives, aligned with President Félix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo’s vision, seek to reduce the nation’s reliance on fish imports while creating jobs and wealth within the fisheries and livestock sectors.

A key component of the reform is the decentralization of state support. Previously concentrated in Kinshasa, assistance is being extended to various provinces to support fishermen and fish traders. This includes the distribution of fishing equipment and the organization of workers into unions and communities to improve governance and resource management.

The Ministry is also prioritizing the fight against illegal fishing, which is viewed as a major threat to aquatic ecosystems. The Minister highlighted that practices such as using mosquito nets and toxic products destroy resources and must be addressed to ensure sustainable production.
