Joseph Kabila leads new FRN politico-military movement in DRC

Former Democratic Republic of the Congo President Joseph Kabila has taken leadership of the Front pour la Refondation de la Nation (FRN), a new politico-military movement announced in Goma on October 12, 2026. The FRN is linked to the AFC/M23 coalition and invokes Article 64 of the Congolese Constitution to justify its actions against the current administration.

The development has drawn sharp condemnation from the Belgian government, with Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot describing the move as “deplorable, incomprehensible and unacceptable.” Similarly, civil society organizations in North Kivu have called for international justice to investigate Kabila, citing concerns that his leadership poses a permanent danger to regional peace.

In response to the announcement, political groups such as the RCET-CPS have accused the Coalition 64 (C64) of ideological rapprochement with the rebel faction due to its perceived silence. Meanwhile, in Gbadolite, large-scale demonstrations were held to reject the FRN and reaffirm support for President Félix Tshisekedi.
