Joseph Kabila criticizes Tshisekedi administration and announces new initiatives
Former President Joseph Kabila has issued a sharp critique of President Félix Tshisekedi’s administration, alleging that the current government has institutionalized tribalism and nepotism. Speaking via his YouTube channel, Kabila claimed the country is no longer a true democracy and accused the leadership of treating the Democratic Republic of the Congo as private property. He further asserted that the government lacks the political will and resources necessary to resolve the ongoing conflict in the eastern part of the country.
In response, government spokesperson Patrick Muyaya dismissed Kabila as a “man of the past” who offers nothing but chaos, suggesting links between the former president and rebel groups like the M23. Other political figures, including Vice-Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Bemba, have also challenged Kabila’s legitimacy, accusing him of past electoral fraud and responsibility for previous violence.
Amidst this political tension, an African Union panel of facilitators has concluded consultations in Kinshasa with President Tshisekedi to discuss peace processes in the Great Lakes region. While the diplomatic mission reported positive discussions, the security situation in the east remains volatile. Reports indicate that the DRC armed forces (FARDC), supported by Wazalendo groups, have recently retaken several strategic localities in Masisi, including Kasake and Shovu, from rebel coalitions.
