DRC National Assembly recommends removal of Higher Education Minister
The Democratic Republic of the Congo's National Assembly has voted unanimously to recommend the removal of Marie-Thérèse Sombo Safi, the Minister of Higher Education, University, Scientific Research, and Innovation (ESURSI). The decision follows a parliamentary inquiry into the management of student tuition fees and related costs within public institutions during the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 academic years.
The commission's findings highlighted significant financial irregularities, including the centralization of revenues into a single account managed by the minister's cabinet. This mechanism reportedly hindered financial traceability and prevented the direct redistribution of funds to intended beneficiary structures. Officials from these institutions noted a significant decrease or total interruption in expected payments.
In addition to allegations of mismanagement and lack of transparency, the inquiry cited abuse of power and interference in ministerial services. The House of Representatives plans to transmit these resolutions to Prime Minister Judith Suminwa Tuluka for action. Furthermore, reports indicate that a motion of no confidence against the minister is currently being prepared by deputies.
