DRC pursues mining sector reforms through international partnerships and legislative reviews

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is pursuing dual strategies to reform and strengthen its mining sector. At the 28th China Mining Conference and Exhibition in Tianjin, Minister of Mines Louis Watum Kabamba engaged in high-level discussions to attract structural investments and foster more balanced, sustainable partnerships. His meetings included Chinese mining groups such as CREC Resources and Zijin, as well as strategic dialogues with Tanzanian mining officials to enhance regional cooperation and resource valuation.

Simultaneously, domestic efforts are underway to reform the country's legal framework. Civil society organizations from various regions, including Lubumbashi and Kinshasa, recently convened in Lubumbashi to discuss revisions to the 2018 Mining Code. Organized by the Carter Center, these discussions aim to provide formal proposals to Parliament regarding sector governance, state control, and transparency, ensuring that legislative amendments reflect practical realities observed on the ground.
