DRC seeks to formalize cobalt sector and expand mining ties with China

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is intensifying efforts to formalize and capitalize on its strategic mineral resources, particularly cobalt. In Kolwezi, international traders are returning to the artisanal mining sector as the state seeks to improve traceability and value capture. The state-owned Entreprise Générale du Cobalt (EGC) has reached significant milestones, including the production of 1,000 tonnes of traceable artisanal cobalt in late 2025 and securing major partnerships with companies such as Mercuria, Trafigura, and EVelution Energy.

Simultaneously, the DRC is seeking to deepen its mining cooperation with China. Minister of Mines Louis Watum Kabamba recently led a delegation to meet with JCHX Mining, a major international player already operating in the DRC. The discussions focused on expanding cooperation in exploration, new project development, and technological investment. The Congolese government aims to shift from simple extraction to a model centered on local value creation, processing, and technological expertise to drive national development.
