Drenthe launches JongLeren program to boost children's physical activity

SportDrenthe, Drenthe municipalities, and GGD Drenthe have launched the JongLeren program, scheduled to run from 2026 to 2029. The initiative aims to improve physical activity, outdoor play, and motor development for children from their first 1,000 days through primary school age.

The program is supported by a €315,000 contribution from the province of Drenthe via its Social Agenda. This funding addresses rising concerns regarding insufficient movement and outdoor play among children, which can lead to developmental disparities, particularly in families facing financial or social challenges. Such delays can impact long-term health, well-being, and academic performance.

JongLeren will expand existing efforts like Beweegstart by utilizing childcare centers, schools, and community sports coaches to provide more opportunities for play-based movement. The program focuses on prevention and knowledge sharing to ensure children receive a healthy foundation for the future.
