Dresden and Magdeburg continue Stolpersteine memorial installations

German cities Dresden and Magdeburg are continuing their efforts to commemorate victims of National Socialism through the installation of 'Stolpersteine' (stumbling stones).

In Dresden, Culture Mayor Annekatrin Klepsch defended the ongoing use of the memorial concept, noting its importance as a visible sign of remembrance for victims of the Holocaust and racism. This follows a decision by the neighboring town of Heidenau to halt the placement of new stones. Recent installations in Dresden include stones for the Rosenberger family and those displaced from the German Hygiene Museum in 1933.

In Magdeburg, 19 new stones are scheduled to be laid on October 15 and 20. These installations, which mark the city's 48th and 49th such events, will be accompanied by relatives of the victims traveling from Germany and the United States to share family histories. Magdeburg currently has 909 stones placed to honor those persecuted or murdered due to their religion, political views, sexual orientation, or disabilities.
