Dresden hosts public writing of a new Torah scroll
A liberal Jewish community in Dresden is making the creation of a new Torah scroll public, a first for Europe. The project, titled ‘Die ewige Schrift - Eine Tora für Dresden’, involves the meticulous hand-writing of the five books of Moses onto parchment using ink and quill.
Professional scribes Joshua Diaz and Liora Mendez are responsible for the work, which requires extreme precision and discipline to follow ancient rules. The process involves writing approximately 304,805 letters. To allow the public to witness this spiritual process, a glass pavilion has been erected in front of the Dresden City Museum, where Mendez works several days a week.
The project began in August 2025 and is expected to continue until August 2027. While Mendez works publicly in the pavilion, Diaz contributes to other sections of the text from Frankfurt.
