Dresden imposes water extraction ban until end of October

Facing a prolonged heat wave and record low water levels in its streams and rivers, the city of Dresden has issued a temporary prohibition on extracting water from surface sources. Effective from 24 June 2026 until 31 October 2026, the ban covers all surface waters in the municipal area, including the Weißeritz, Prießnitz, Lockwitzbach and numerous smaller brooks. Residents and property owners may not pump or manually collect water, and violations attract fines of at least €50.

The restriction does not apply to groundwater use, which remains permitted, nor to extractions that have a specific water‑right permit. Environmental office director René Herold emphasized the need to protect the natural water balance and urged citizens to use rainwater and water‑saving practices. The city warned that current precipitation forecasts are unlikely to raise water levels before the ban lifts.
