Dresden launches educational support package for low-income students

In Dresden, approximately 65,000 students across 148 schools are beginning the new school year. To alleviate financial pressure on low-income families, the city provides the 'Bildungspaket' (Education and Participation Package).

This support includes an annual allowance of 195 euros for personal school supplies, such as bags, notebooks, and stationery, paid in two installments. Additionally, the package covers the full cost of school lunches in schools, daycare centers, and after-school care. It also covers costs for one-day excursions and multi-day class trips.

Dr. Kristin Klaudia Kaufmann, the official for Labor, Social Affairs, Health, and Housing, emphasized that the start of school should be a joyful occasion rather than a financial burden. Families receiving basic security, social assistance, or asylum seeker benefits typically receive the school supply allowance automatically, while those receiving housing benefit or child supplement must apply.
