Dresden rolls out major tree‑planting and smart‑city road‑monitoring projects

The Dresden city administration will plant 61 new street trees along Augsburger Straße between June and December 2026, using species chosen for heat and drought tolerance. The €569,405 programme is funded by the city, the Blasewitz district and public donations, and includes three phases of planting, road‑relocation work and a three‑year maintenance contract.

At the same time, Dresden is conducting a digital survey of the condition of its entire road network from June to September 2026. An orange‑painted specialist vehicle equipped with laser scanners, sensors and high‑resolution cameras will scan roughly 1,830 km of streets, detecting potholes, cracks as narrow as 0.5 mm and surface temperature changes. Data from five fixed road sensors will be combined with the vehicle measurements to create a predictive maintenance model. The €1.3 million “Strategic Preservation Management” project is 65 % funded by KfW under the federal Smart‑City programme, with the city covering the remaining costs.
