Walking clubs emerge in Germany to combat loneliness

Walking clubs are emerging as a new social format in Germany to help individuals meet new people and combat loneliness. Founded in Dresden in July by Konrad Höferth, the club organizes evening walks through the city center, attracting a diverse group of participants ranging from young to old.

These clubs gain visibility through social media and are appearing in various cities, including Berlin, Leipzig, Frankfurt am Main, Hamburg, and Oldenburg. Some gatherings involve hundreds of participants. To facilitate interaction, organizers often use moderators to pose questions or tasks, and awareness teams to manage the routes.

Jens Kleinert, a sports and social psychologist at the German Sport University Cologne, describes the trend not as a boom, but as a new format that complements existing social offerings in a pleasant manner.
