Drew Brees nearly attempted NFL comeback with Denver Broncos
Former NFL quarterback Drew Brees reportedly considered a comeback with the Denver Broncos during last year's playoffs, but the attempt was halted by physical discomfort. Following a fractured ankle suffered by starter Bo Nix during the Divisional Playoffs, Broncos offensive assistants Joe Lombardi and Pete Carmichael reached out to Brees to gauge his interest in returning to the field for the AFC Championship Game.
Brees attempted a workout to test his conditioning and throwing ability, but discomfort in his wrist prevented the comeback from progressing. Denver head coach Sean Payton stated he was unaware of the staff's outreach at the time, noting he only learned of the situation after the fact.
Ultimately, the Broncos moved forward with backup Jarrett Stidham for the conference title game against the New England Patriots. Brees, who was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame this summer, had been officially retired since 2021.
