Drex digital currency project faces delay until 2027
The development of Drex, the Central Bank of Brazil’s digital currency project, has entered a period of stagnation. Following the conclusion of the second pilot phase in November 2025, the initiative is expected to pause until 2027.
Several factors contribute to this delay, including technical challenges regarding the scalability, privacy, and security of distributed ledger technology (DLT). Additionally, internal debates persist regarding whether the project's governance should follow a centralized model similar to Pix or a coordinated model like Open Finance. Political hurdles also exist, as obtaining Congressional approval for a sovereign digital currency (CBDC) remains uncertain.
In response to this pause, the private sector is increasingly taking the lead. Companies such as Cerc are developing interoperability platforms and digital asset infrastructures to fill the gap left by the central bank's delay.
