Drexel University officials testify on Academy of Natural Sciences closure

Drexel University officials testified before the Philadelphia City Council Legislative Oversight Committee regarding the abrupt closure of the Academy of Natural Sciences. The nearly 200-year-old institution closed on September 27, citing financial difficulties.

Melissa Richman, representing the Drexel University Office of the President, stated that the decision followed a rigorous two-year study and was not "abrupt or hasty." However, members of the Save The Academy Coalition questioned why the museum was closed with only one month's notice and without a prior fundraising campaign.

The hearing was marked by tension after Deputy Mayor Patricia Wellenbach declined to appear in person. Although she was tasked by Mayor Cherelle Parker to help preserve the scientific society's mission, Wellenbach submitted written testimony claiming she was not the appropriate person to speak on behalf of Drexel or the Academy. City Council members expressed frustration with this decision, with some characterizing the refusal to appear as a sign of disrespect.
