Drexel University research explores music's role in pain management
A review of 57 studies led by Drexel University professor Joak Bradet suggests that the effectiveness of music in managing pain depends more on the listener's relationship with the music than on simple distraction. The research indicates that pleasant, calming music can reduce pain intensity, whereas unpleasant music may actually increase it.
Key findings show that the ability to choose one's own music significantly improves pain tolerance. Furthermore, the benefits of music can persist even if the audio is stopped before the painful stimulus begins, suggesting that the impact is not merely a matter of occupying mental space or providing a distraction during the sensation of pain.
