DRI seizes Chinese-origin fireworks worth Rs 12 crore at Chennai Port
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) Hyderabad Zonal Unit has seized Chinese-origin fireworks valued at approximately Rs 12 crore at Chennai Port. The seizure occurred during coordinated operations following intelligence regarding the illegal import of the goods.
Investigators found that the fireworks were concealed behind cartons containing misdeclared cargo, which included stationery items, medical gloves, plastic clips, hair bands, storage wardrobes, and shoe racks. The attempt to misdeclare the items was intended to evade customs scrutiny.
Under India's Foreign Trade Policy, the import of firecrackers and fireworks is restricted and requires specific authorizations from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) and the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO). Because the consignments lacked the mandatory licenses and were imported through concealment, they were seized under the Customs Act, 1962.
