Drinkaware survey reveals shifting alcohol consumption trends in the UK

A national monitor survey by the alcohol charity Drinkaware reveals shifting drinking patterns across the United Kingdom. While there is a growing trend toward moderation, with 91% of drinkers using techniques such as taking drink-free days or choosing low-alcohol options, there is also an increase in binge drinking behaviors.

In Scotland, the data shows that adults tend to drink less frequently than the UK average, with 40% drinking at least once a week compared to 45% across the UK. However, Scottish drinkers are more likely to consume larger amounts during a single session. Approximately 22% of Scottish drinkers consumed seven or more units in a typical session, compared to 17% across the UK, and 66% reported engaging in binge drinking in the past year, versus 61% for the wider UK population.

The research suggests that while moderation is becoming more integrated into drinking culture, it is not being applied consistently across all situations. The rise in low- and no-alcohol product consumption and the use of moderation strategies may also be impacting the hospitality sector, as more drinkers report visiting pubs and bars less frequently than they did a year ago.
