Muhammed Emin Sarıoğlu elected Deputy Mayor of Üsküdar
Muhammed Emin Sarıoğlu has been elected as the new Deputy Mayor of Üsküdar following a municipal council vote. Sarıoğlu, representing the People's Alliance (Cumhur İttifakı), ran as the sole candidate after the Republican People's Party (CHP) and the New Party (Yeni Parti) decided not to field candidates for this specific election.
The election follows a period of significant political instability in the district. The previous mayor, Sinem Dedetaş, was removed from office and arrested following a corruption investigation. Her successor, Dündar Ziya Gültekin, was elected in September but tragically died in a traffic accident on October 15 while traveling to Ankara for the Turkish Municipalities Union elections.
In the investigation into Gültekin's fatal accident, his official driver, Muharrem Kiremitçi, was arrested on charges of “causing death by negligence.” The recent council vote concludes a series of leadership transitions within the Üsküdar Municipality triggered by legal and accidental events.
