Retired NYPD detective arrested in fatal George Washington Bridge shooting

Victor Romero, a 62-year-old retired NYPD detective, has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of Koran Irvine, 46, on the George Washington Bridge. The incident occurred around 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday, October 20, during the evening rush hour on the New Jersey-bound upper level of the bridge.

Investigators believe the shooting was a road-rage encounter triggered after Irvine’s blue Volkswagen Golf was captured on surveillance video nearly colliding with another vehicle on an entrance ramp. Authorities allege that Romero, driving a black Range Rover, pulled alongside Irvine’s vehicle and fired a single shot through the rear passenger window. The bullet struck Irvine in the shoulder and exited his neck. Irvine was transported to Englewood Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The shooting caused significant traffic delays, resulting in the closure of bridge lanes for approximately five hours. While Romero was initially facing murder charges, he was later arraigned on a charge of first-degree manslaughter. A judge set his bond at $1 million. Romero, who retired from the NYPD in 2001, allegedly failed to call 911 following the incident.
