Driver's license renewal regulations in Portugal and Brazil

Drivers in Portugal and Brazil face different regulatory frameworks regarding the expiration and renewal of driving licenses.

In Portugal, the Institute of Mobility and Transport (IMT) advises motorists to verify their license validity through the ‘A Minha Carta de Condução’ online platform. This is particularly important for older licenses, as legal revalidation requirements may differ from the printed date due to legislative changes. The IMT recommends starting the renewal process six months before expiration. Driving with an expired license is a traffic violation, and if the license has been expired for more than two years, additional documentation may be required.

In Brazil, the National Driver's License (CNH) includes a 30-day grace period after the expiration date. Drivers are not considered to be in violation of traffic laws until the license has been expired for more than 30 days. Once this period is exceeded, driving is classified as a very serious infraction, resulting in fines and the seizure of the document.
