Drivers weigh all-season versus winter tires for safety and cost

As temperatures drop, drivers face decisions regarding tire selection for safety and economic efficiency. All-season tires are increasingly popular due to the convenience of avoiding seasonal changes and storage costs. While many believe all-season tires are unsuitable for winter, high-quality models bearing the 3PMSF (Three Peak Mountain Snowflake) symbol have passed standardized snow grip tests.

However, experts note that all-season tires may not match the performance of dedicated winter tires in extreme conditions, such as heavy snow, ice, or steep mountain terrain. When daily average temperatures fall below 7°C, summer tires lose elasticity and harden, significantly increasing braking distances and the risk of skidding. Dedicated winter tires are designed to remain flexible in low temperatures, maintaining essential contact with the road surface to ensure vehicle stability.
