Driving habits and posture impact vehicle maintenance and safety
Common driving habits and improper seating positions can lead to increased vehicle wear and reduced driver safety. An analysis by Parclick suggests that approximately one in four mechanical failures may be linked to habitual driver distractions or improper usage.
To prevent transmission wear, drivers should avoid resting their arms on the gear lever. Additionally, keeping the clutch pedal depressed while waiting at traffic lights can cause unnecessary strain on the system; shifting to neutral is recommended for prolonged stops. Driving frequently with a low fuel level can also damage the fuel pump by exposing it to sediment and reducing its ability to cool itself.
Regarding ergonomics and safety, the ACI-SARA Safe Driving Manual emphasizes the importance of correct posture. Drivers should adjust their seats so they can depress pedals fully without fully extending their legs. The seatback should ideally form an angle slightly greater than 90 degrees to reduce spinal fatigue, and the steering wheel distance should be adjusted to allow for easy control while keeping shoulders against the seatback.
