Driving license costs and renewal rules in Spain

In Spain, the cost of obtaining a driving license varies significantly based on location and the number of practical lessons required. While enrollment fees typically range between 50 and 200 euros, the primary expense lies in practical driving classes, which cost between 25 and 50 euros per session. Most students require 20 to 30 lessons, leading to an average total cost of approximately 1,100 to 1,400 euros. In smaller cities, costs may fall below 1,000 euros, whereas major urban centers like Madrid or Barcelona often exceed this amount.

Regarding expired licenses, the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) has clarified that drivers do not need to retake theoretical or practical exams even if their license has been expired for several years. There is no maximum time limit set by the DGT for renewal, provided the driver has not had their right to drive revoked or lost their license due to point depletion. To renew, drivers must pass a psychophysical aptitude test at an authorized driver recognition center, which can also manage the full renewal process, including fees and photography.
