Driving safety: precautions for navigating flooded roads

As heavy storms and year-end holidays approach, drivers are advised to take specific precautions to avoid property damage and safety risks when encountering flooded roads.

Key safety recommendations include checking water levels before proceeding; water should not exceed the center of the wheel hub. If crossing, drivers should use a low gear, turn off the air conditioning, and maintain a low, constant acceleration to prevent water from entering the exhaust. Entering wet sections slowly is essential to prevent waves from reaching the air intake or engine compartment.

Attempting to restart a vehicle that has stalled in water can lead to hydrostatic lock, which can destroy pistons and seize the engine block. Furthermore, insurance companies may deny claims if they determine the driver intentionally increased the risk by deliberately attempting to cross visibly impassable flooded areas.

In extreme cases where water rises rapidly toward the floor or doors, drivers are urged to prioritize personal safety by unlocking doors and abandoning the vehicle for higher ground. If a crossing is completed, an immediate mechanical inspection of brakes, electrical connections, and oil/filter contamination is recommended.
