DroidDeck enables local Steam gaming on Android devices
The open-source Android application DroidDeck is enabling users to run Steam games locally on smartphones and handheld devices without the need for cloud streaming or remote play. The app functions by establishing an isolated Linux runtime environment on the device without requiring root access.
By utilizing translation layers such as FEX to convert x86 commands to ARM and Proton/Wine to translate Windows graphics and system interfaces to Linux/Vulkan, the software allows modern smartphone processors to execute PC titles in real time. Demonstrations on the Ayn Odin 2 Mini, which features a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, have shown titles like Monster Hunter Rise and Guilty Gear Strive running via the app.
As an unofficial community project, DroidDeck is not affiliated with Valve. Users should be aware of potential risks, including the possibility of anti-cheat systems flagging the translation layer as manipulation, as well as increased heat and battery consumption.
