Drone attacks strike Al Zawiya refinery and desalination plant in Libya

Critical infrastructure in Zawiya, Libya, has been targeted by two drone attacks within a 24-hour period. An unidentified drone struck an oil storage tank at the Al Zawiya refinery, causing a leak in an unprocessed oil tank. While the leak was contained and no fires or injuries were reported, the Al Zawiya Oil Refining Company expressed serious concern regarding military equipment being present within the refinery complex.

Following the refinery incident, a drone also struck the Zawiya desalination plant, the largest in western Libya. The attack caused a water leak and damaged transport pipelines. No casualties were reported in the desalination plant strike.

Local municipal council members have called for an urgent investigation to identify the operators of the drones and hold those responsible legally accountable. They have urged the Government of National Unity to implement security measures to protect vital infrastructure and prevent these facilities from becoming zones of armed confrontation amidst ongoing militia instability in the region.
