Drone debris damages vehicle in Lithuania's Pasvalys district

Drone debris has reportedly damaged a vehicle in the Pasvalys district of Lithuania, marking a potential first public instance of military drone fragments causing damage to civilian property. While the driver remained uninjured, the incident has raised questions regarding legal liability and insurance compensation.

Compensation depends on the circumstances of the fall. If the damage resulted from the lawful use of force by Lithuanian or NATO forces to neutralize a threat, owners may apply to the Ministry of National Defence for direct loss compensation. However, this requires establishing a direct link between military action and the damage.

If the drone fell without military intervention, compensation may fall under private insurance. Some providers, such as Swedbank, have offered temporary free coverage for over 260,000 homes, though this service is currently slated to expire in February. Other insurers, like Lietuvos draudimas, offer similar protection for a fee, subject to specific coverage limits for apartments and houses.
