Drone security challenges rise following mobile-controlled incident
Security concerns regarding drone threats have intensified following an incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport, where an explosive-laden drone was controlled via a standard 4G mobile network. The Federal Criminal Police Office reported that the drone utilized a commercial mobile hotspot, allowing operators to control the device from any location with internet access. This method poses significant challenges for traditional defense systems, as jamming would require disrupting all mobile frequencies.
In response to evolving threats, Telekom is deploying radio frequency (RF) sensors to detect drones and their pilots. These passive sensors, provided by partners such as Vorpal and Senhive, can identify drones and remote controllers by detecting their electronic signals without interfering with existing mobile networks. The system is designed for integration into command and control software, allowing security forces to monitor and respond to drone incidents in real-time, particularly around critical infrastructure.
