Drone strike kills clergy at Ethiopia's Arsema Monastery
On 22 July 2026 a drone strike hit the historic Arsema Monastery in South Wollo, Amhara Region, Ethiopia, killing two nuns and six priests and injuring dozens of worshippers. The Ethiopian government alleged that the Fano militia was using the monastery as a hide‑out, though the attack occurred during a religious service. International religious leaders, including Ecumenical Patriarch Jerry Pillay, condemned the strike and called for an immediate, impartial investigation. Ethiopian Christians say the tragedy has heightened fear about attending worship services, with pastors noting that “our churches have become places of death” and urging believers to seek safety and justice.
