Drone technology advances in navigation and commercial utility

Advancements in autonomous drone technology are expanding the commercial utility of unmanned aerial vehicles beyond simple surveillance and delivery. Researchers at Durham University have developed a navigation system called CORTO-Planner. This system allows drones to navigate tight, crowded spaces at higher speeds by creating a “piecewise parametric safe corridor.” This adaptable tunnel of airspace provides up to six times more usable flight space than previous methods, enabling smoother movement and real-time obstacle avoidance.

Simultaneously, the commercial drone market is seeing a shift toward drones performing physical tasks in high-risk environments. Applications now include agriculture, construction, and infrastructure maintenance. For example, the company SkyPSI is utilizing drones for commercial cleaning of building exteriors and windows, allowing operators to work from the ground. Market research indicates significant growth potential, with projections suggesting the global commercial drone market could reach between $52.06 billion and $65.25 billion by the early 2030s.
