Drone technology transforms modern warfare in Ukraine and Korea
The evolution of drone technology is reshaping modern warfare, as seen in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia and the emerging capabilities of North Korea. In Ukraine, the military has deployed airborne robots and drones for strategic operations, including combat airdrops and mine clearance. These unmanned systems have enabled Ukrainian forces to conduct operations behind enemy lines and have been utilized to counter Russian advances, including a reported pincer maneuver.
Similarly, North Korea is developing a drone program to bridge the technological gap between its Cold War-era hardware and the superior military capabilities of South Korea and the United States. While drones may not shift the overall military balance on the Korean Peninsula, they provide Pyongyang with inexpensive tools for “gray zone coercion.” These asymmetric capabilities allow for operations below the nuclear threshold, forcing adversaries to divert significant resources toward defense.
