Drones and AI deployed to monitor Hungarian vineyards

The National Food Chain Safety Office (Nébih) has deployed drones equipped with artificial intelligence to monitor Hungarian vineyards for symptoms of golden nematode-related diseases, specifically golden nematode-induced symptoms. Starting September 18, drones are surveying vineyards across seven counties: Bács-Kiskun, Baranya, Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén, Győr-Moson-Sopron, Heves, Tolna, and Veszprém.

The technology uses AI to analyze aerial footage to identify potential infection sites more rapidly than manual inspection. While the drones do not provide a definitive diagnosis, they allow authorities to conduct targeted inspections in high-risk areas. This initiative is critical because the pathogen is present in all 22 Hungarian wine regions, with the Zala and Balaton areas being particularly affected. Since there is currently no known cure for the disease, early detection is vital for managing the spread caused by the American grapevine phylloxera.
