Drought and fires threaten forests in Ózd, Hungary

Severe drought conditions in the Ózd region of Hungary are exacerbating the frequency and intensity of forest fires. According to data from HungaroMet, some areas in Borsod faced precipitation deficits of up to 120 millimeters by late July.

Local experts warn that the combination of extreme dryness and traditional seasonal burning by residents is threatening long-term forest health. An anonymous forest engineer noted that the current summer conditions are significantly more destructive than spring fires, as the dried vegetation offers little resistance. If the trend continues, the region could face permanent loss of forest cover, leading to soil erosion, landslides, and dust storms.

Furthermore, there are reports of inadequate equipment within the firefighting services, with claims that personnel are forced to use donated or personally purchased tools due to regulatory issues regarding official equipment.
