Drought and heat impact Cornwall estate and English wine industry
Severe drought and record heat in southwest England are creating unprecedented challenges for regional land management and agriculture. The Duchy of Cornwall, a private estate managed by Prince William, faces potential impacts on its commercial, agricultural, and leasing operations due to the extreme water scarcity.
British government authorities have described the water shortage as a phenomenon not seen in decades. Environment Secretary Dame Angela Eagle and Water Minister Emma Hardy have implemented contingency measures, including daily monitoring of river flows and reservoir levels, as well as inspections of companies extracting water from natural sources.
The climate conditions have also significantly impacted the English wine industry. Due to the heat and drought of the 2026 summer, WineGB has requested permission to acidify wines for the first time to compensate for lower natural acidity levels. The extreme weather forced many producers to harvest grapes up to a month earlier than usual to manage sugar levels and alcohol potential.
