Oxford Economics predicts that global food prices could rise by 11.8 percent in 2026 and 4.8 percent in 2027, with wheat prices potentially increasing by 36 percent in the third quarter of 2026.

In Europe, the impact is widespread. The grain harvest forecast for the EU-27 and the UK has been lowered to 286.6 million tons, down from 310 million tons in 2025. Germany specifically expects a 7 percent drop in grain production. In France, the vegetable sector is facing a historical crisis, with predicted yield declines for peas (40 percent), broccoli (60 percent), and artichokes (50 to 100 percent). Additionally, heatwaves have reduced daily egg production in France by approximately one million eggs.

Other regions are also affected. In the Netherlands, potato yields are expected to be at least 8 percent lower than in 2025. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, drought and heat have pushed the agricultural sector toward collapse, with some crops suffering losses of up to 90 percent. These climatic shocks, combined with high costs for fuel and fertilizers and geopolitical tensions such as the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, are creating sustained upward pressure on global food markets.
