Drought and heatwaves threaten agricultural yields in Switzerland and Germany

Persistent heatwaves and extreme drought are causing significant crop losses and rising operational costs for farmers in Switzerland and Germany.

In Switzerland, the Aargau Farmers' Association (BVA) reports that corn is withering in many areas, leading to substantial yield decreases and increased expenses for irrigation and feed. The BVA is calling for fairer producer prices and solidarity across the value chain to help farmers manage climate-related costs. They support the introduction of a temporary drought surcharge for potato harvests in 2026 to ensure the economic viability of local food production.

In Germany, Farmers' President Joachim Rukwied warned of below-average harvests for grain, wheat, and rapeseed. In southern Germany, some crops could face total failure. The drought is also preventing new fodder from growing. Rukwied highlighted the financial strain on farmers due to low producer prices combined with high energy and diesel costs, calling for government support such as an extension of agricultural diesel tax reductions.
