Drought and heavy rains impact agricultural production in Mexico
Agricultural sectors in different regions of Mexico are facing significant challenges due to extreme weather conditions. In Morelos, a drought linked to the El Niño phenomenon has severely impacted rain-fed crops. The state Secretariat of Agricultural Development (Sedagro) reported that approximately 25,000 hectares have been affected, primarily involving corn, sorghum, beans, and squash. In some areas, production losses for corn and beans are reported to be nearly total, prompting the government to activate catastrophic insurance coverage.
In Sinaloa, the situation is driven by excessive rainfall rather than drought. Heavy rains have affected up to 80 percent of peanut crops that were still in the ground or in the drying process. Pasiano Mojardín Heraldez, president of the National Union of Peanut Producers, warned that moisture could damage the quality of the harvest, potentially leading to at least a 10 percent decrease in commercial prices. Producers expressed concern that buyers might further reduce prices for damaged goods, exacerbating existing economic difficulties in the sector.
