Drought causes water restrictions in Mureș and Bistrița-Năsăud

Prolonged drought is causing significant water supply restrictions in several Romanian counties, specifically Mureș and Bistrița-Năsăud.

In Mureș County, 28 localities are facing scheduled water delivery. Residents in areas like Voiniceni report having water only for brief intervals, sometimes as late as midnight to 2:00 AM, forcing them to wake up at night to collect supplies. Aquaserv representative Nicu Tomulețiu stated that water consumption has nearly doubled compared to winter and spring, and distribution networks are struggling to handle these peak demand periods.

In Bistrița-Năsăud County, the flow of the Someșul Mare river has dropped to less than half of its normal level, with some tributaries reaching only 10% to 25% of their usual flow. This has led to pressure issues in the Sângeorz-Băi resort and mandatory water shutdowns in Malin between 10:00 AM and 5:00 AM to allow reservoirs to replenish.
