Europe faces deadly heatwave crisis with 35,000 excess deaths

Extreme heatwaves across Europe have resulted in a significant health crisis, with official data indicating more than 35,000 excess deaths. During a single critical week in late June, over 20,000 deaths were recorded due to heatstroke and dehydration as a heat dome covered much of Western and Central Europe.

The highest mortality rates were observed in the four most populous European Union nations: Germany recorded approximately 14,000 excess deaths, France saw around 7,300, Spain registered over 4,400, and Italy reported roughly 2,700 victims. Experts suggest that consolidated seasonal data may show even higher totals, highlighting the strain on European health systems and infrastructure caused by rapid climate change.
